I'd argue it's more effective than a replacement attack, because it also serves the purpose of advancing Trump's goal of being corrupt as shit. If it wasn't, he wouldn't have gone looking specifically to create dirt on Biden.

It's an extension of the email thing. Trump likes to normalize his own corruption, point to the opposition as also corrupt (which makes his okay), and then pivot to the anti-corruption rhetoric people love. The media won't play along this time, but that's fine for Trump because his base also hates the media.
