Well I'll say I am also not all the way through yet and maybe I'll change my tune about it being in the better half later.

I think honestly that Pokemon is just filling its role as a casual series for me, because that is the thing that it's good at. A lot of the positive impressions I've seen are from revolving door fans that have been on a break like I have and of course this audience is going to like the game more. Gamefreak designs for this audience and not the hardcore fans. I got tired of the overwhelming sameness of the series during Gen 7 and so Gen 8 feels more refreshing. And maybe the wild area and raids will get old eventually but I think that's a bigger deal than totem fights and z-moves. Still liking them so far. My "hardcore" Pokemon experience consists basically of grinding up a good team and doing online, and I might stick around a bit for that again since I did it in gen 6.

I dont want to sit here and shit on XY because I think those are by far the worst Pokemon games I've completed, but this compares positively in basically every way. The world and Pokemon design are pretty great. Characters are much less obnoxious. XY has megas and that's it. I also don't think the older gens have aged particularly well so there is that.

Also shameless and obligatory "play Shin Megami Tensei" for monster collecting JRPGs that are actually great.
