All the previous games basically made them feel like an afterthought while you controlled the ONE TRUE CHILD that was picked by God to stop Evil Team #74 from whatever barely explained scheme they're trying to get away with. Now, am I saying I want this every time? Outside of making the gyms actually feel important, no. But the traditional Pokemon story has been done to death so many times that I don't really miss it, and favor this approach this one time, even if I think it could have been better.
