The fact that episodes 7-9 have to be carried by characters from the original series, especially now that Palpatine is being brought back to make for a villain that isn't terrible, is a pretty clear sign that the writers failed to develop any of the characters. I felt even the old characters were crap in this. No one and I mean no one cares for the new characters.
