I have a lot of empathy for people, probably more than the average person. But the majority of people I encounter online and offline on a daily basis are pretty damn unpleasant and full of hate or just plain ignorance. Like the amount of shit I've received over the years for being mentally and physically ill is ridiculous, same goes for the crap my fiancee gets for being housebound and not confirming to gender norms. I'm not a dog person but I've had dogs and they are very comforting. Through my relationship with my fiancee I've ended up with a cat and I love him a lot, I'd much rather be around him than a lot of people. I don't think that reflects badly on me as a person. I can totally understand people thinking dogs are better than people, although a lot of dog/animal lovers are actually arseholes themselves and just use animals to hide their misanthropy.
