Reports from the time describe how Columbus governed Hispaniola through torture and mutilation. He had natives killed indiscriminately and would order things like having someones ears and nose cut off for stealing corn.
Give it all the historical context you want, when Columbus was given power over others, he revealed that he was a sadistic monster with no regard for humanity.
and so what it was a different time that none of us today can hope to change it happened so just use it as a learning experience and dont repeat the mistakes of the past.
