I want to learn to meditate but first I have to learn to sit cross legged.

Meditation is easy. It takes concentration but its but no means a difficult practice.
And position isnt too important. You could meditate sitting up in a chair or on the edge of your bed.
Dont be discouraged.

And if you do start practicing meditation, remember that the idea is not to let your mind wander, and it will. A lot. Probably every few seconds your thoughts will start to drift, thats okay, just bring them back to the front of your mind

This is how I concentrate while meditating: try to focus on your breath. Only your breath. Focus on the way it sounds. The way it feels. Bring your mind back from wandering. Focus on your body. How does is feel? Aches or pains? Sudden itches? Thats okay. Ignore them if you can. Bring your mind back. Become very aware of your body position, how much pressure is on your butt from sitting. Or perhaps your feet. Or your legs. Youre analyzing your body on an internal level.
Focus on your environment for a moment. Are you warm or cold? Do you feel a draft? A breeze perhaps? How quiet is around you? Even if you thought it was quiet a moment ago how quiet is it really? Can you hear any signs of other people? Other animals?
Are there any mechanical sounds in background? Like a fan blowing or your refrigerator engine? Bring your mind back, dont let it wander.
Now youve analyzed your body, and youve analyzed your environment. Time to analyze your mind itself.
Whats troubling you? Lets start small. Lets focus only on today. Did something happen today that troubles you? What could you have done differently, if anything, if a similar situation were to present itself again? How can you handle the situation better? Bring your mind back to you. Only focus on today. Playback your day. Focus on the good and bad alike. Maybe it was mostly a good day. We could all use more of those.
If it was a bad day, what can you learn from it? Theres always something to learn. How to handle the situation better. Maybe keep your cool. Or control untamed emotions. Maybe you didnt know what to say or do, think about what you can do to prevent that in the future.
Keep bringing your mind back. Dont let it wander and think about random things like did you feed the cat, or will your friend do that thing. Or how funny that joke was. Its gonna try to wander, just bring it back often. As soon as you catch it.

Lastly I like to think of something in my life that truly makes me happy. And just focus on that for a few moments.
And thats about it! Congrats you know how to meditate :)

Sorry for the long post. I got really into it.
