It's forced now. nvm FUCK game freak From what I've read the exp share just doesn't exist anymore and the exp formula has been tweaked to give all Pokemon exp. Whether it's balanced or not is one thing but on the surface it doesn't seem like a bad idea. It's the same as the exp share in Sun / Moon. Not tweaked in any way from that.
