You'd still basically have to reinvent the entire tech tree to convert that tech into something that would fly a train. I really don't think he made the train exactly like it was shown back in 1885. I've always thought that he made a train just able to time travel, then traveled to the future since it was already shown they can convert your vehicle into a hover vehicle.
