It seems like she had a very firm idea of the big story beats, particularly the closer the series got to its end, but wasn't really sure how to get there in a compelling way in a narrative context. Eh, I find it hard to believe that the whole ~~Elder Wand~~ situation was anything but something she made at the last second when writing Book 6 because she realized she had no way to end the series without making something convoluted.
