Because of negative press attention which can discourage purchases.

Which games have gotten the most negative press for sexual content? I'd say it's EASILY mass effect and GTA. Mass effect still sold shit loads before EA gutted the studio and forced a different team to make Andromeda and GTAV is close to the most profitable game of all time. The idea that moral backlash actually reduces sales is false demonstrably. Bad public press does nothing to games and honestly probably actually helps most games by serving as free advertising.

Steam gets controversy for being uneven about their shit but to my knowledge the blatantly pornographic games they have on the site have not caused them any problems since they added good ways to filter what type of games you see on the store page.

Basically what you are saying is just false. It doesn't work that way and actually the opposite is true. It's pretty easy to notice it's the japanese companies with the weird censorship practices and I can only guess it's cause they just don't understand how the western market actually functions. Complain about the sex scenes in the witcher and how the writers didn't want to write them all you want, the series is massively successful and critically acclaimed despite more sexual content then most games sony or nintendo are censoring. CD Projekt Red (the witcher devs) are also one the devs with the highest public opinion so the idea that sexualization in games somehow destroys the public's perception of your studio is just complete bullshit.
