Monika is a character in a game who has become aware that shes in a game. At first she appears as just another girl in the Literature Club, specifically the president, but later on we see that shes not only aware of her fictional status, she can alter the aspects of the other girls. And alter them she does, to horrifying and graphic effect. Monika wants you not the main character, but you, the player to reciprocate her feelings of love. Its a tragedy.

You can talk to Monika for hours after she kills off the other three girls. Youll get to hear her takes on everything from writing to depression to God. Shes patient. She knows youre not going anywhere.

Doki Doki Literature Club is metafictional in a similar way to Undertale, but DDLC takes it a few steps farther and makes the metafictional conceit a huge aspect of the story, and of Monikas character. Its very unique. Despite all the horrible things she did, I really felt for Monika. What would you do in her situation?
