For an extra $180 (2 tuners, 500 GB) or $220 (4 tuners, 1 TB), you can add on the Fire TV Recast, which lets you record over-the-air TV shows then stream them to the Fire TV, Echo Show, or mobile device. I don't think Apple has anything similar.

All sounding good but this got my attention. How do the tuners work? Guessing over the air or is there a digital method Amazon's using?

Over-the-air, you would need an antenna to pick up the programs. So it's entirely free other than the initial purchase.

Sounds pricey for local stuff. Ever used YouTube TV? Thinking of it over Hulu Plus. Insane Hulu Plus locks to one location and can only be changed 4 times a year. So zero sharing.

It is a bit expensive, but it's still cheaper than a Tivo and it's a one-time purchase. Plus it gives you a bit more flexibility if you live somewhere where a large outdoor antenna is required since you can connect it to multiple Fire TVs.

Might go this route. Are there antenna maps out there?

they all do more or less the same thing, and have the same apps. apple tv gets a bunch of exclusive shitty mobile games, ok?

Kinda figured. We don't really play games so might be a waste. Ever tried YouTube TV? Hulu Live works but it's stupid its location locked.
