Sam is an ordinary teenager who moves into a house with a...troubled past. Lonely without her big sister Katie to provide emotional support, Sam writes journal entries to simulate the experience of talking with her. Through these journal entries, we learn of Sams struggle to make friends at first until she meets Lonnie, an outspoken punk girl. We see Sam and Lonnie take their friendship into a romantic relationship that must stay hidden, because this is the mid-90s and people just dont talk about that sort of thing. And we see Sams heartbreak over Lonnies decision to enlist in the army and her happiness at the prospect of starting a new life together.

Sams troubles are normal things every kid goes through at some point: making friends, fitting in, worrying about being cool, getting along with parents. For Sam, these are all compounded because of her homosexuality and the time period she lives in. Her journal entries portray her as someone players can relate to and root for.
