But think about that: does that really make sense outside a dystopian narrative? If people are usually amoral, how would shaming (a tactic relying on guilt and empathy) have any effect? Likewise, if people are normally this way, how effective do you think laws would really be? The argument can be made (and quite convincingly) that largest reason society functions within its own guidelines isn't due to force, but mutual cooperation. Not to say that it's perfect, and certainly everybody is guilty of acting out of self interests at certain times, but to paint the picture of most people as malevolent beasts seems inaccurate and needlessly cynical.
