I think Trump's cheapness actually helps him a lot in relating to non-rich people. Hunter Biden, being from a rich, well-connected family, probably felt $600k a year for sitting on a board was a perfectly normal thing. Like, that's probably the going rate for sitting on corporate boards. Similarly, Hillary probably felt 250k for a speech was ordinary and reasonable. But to average people, these kinds of sums are outrageously large.
