Democrats got to enjoy 8 years of being the dove party under Bush after 8 years of being the warhawk party in the Clinton administration. Conversely, Republicans were dove-ish during the Clinton era (blaming the Iraq bombing on the Lewinsky scandal, for example) and then drove off a cliff from 2000 to 2008.
