Nominator: Snake (4/15)

(?, "I dunno lets just say its probably an 8 and move on?", Whatever)

[I thought I knew what I thought about the song, but the flatlining at the end has me reconsidering everything about it.]

If it weren't for the ending completely turning everything on its head, I doubt this song would have made it so far. But that sudden flatlining paints the song as being much darker. My first thought was that the character in the song killed themselves; that they hadn't gotten any better at all. I'm reminded of how you should be worried if someone has a sudden recovery--that it can be a sign that they've fully accepted suicide. In which case, this is by far the most depressing song nominated at either topic.

[Later Edit: Grocery had shootings and suicide, but the song never confirms that he actually killed someone (after the shooting he yells at cardboard cutouts, so it's debatable if he even shot anyone; and if he's the same character from Alien, then it's true he caused people's death in that song--but only on accident after his suicide attempt goes spectacularly wrong) & he explictly fails the suicide attempt.

And while there were plenty of depressing songs last topic, they tended to be more up front with their misery. They don't just blindside you like Recovery's ending does.]

...On the other hand, I could be reading too far into it. This was the last song on the album, so it could be a joke--LOL ALBUM IS DONE AND DEAD NOW or something like that. And it is that uncertainty--not knowing if this is meant to be a happy & optimistic song or soul-crushingly tragic song--that I'm rather drawn to. There are things to think about and discuss. Of course, it's still topics that I don't particularly wish to discuss, but still. It's one of the more interesting nominations.

Strangely, I can't find anyone talking about this song in any detail. Most reviews of the album don't even spend a single sentence about this track, and the few that do seem content to just call it a happy song and never acknowledge the flatlining at all. I was so baffled by the lack of discussion that I had to track the song down on Spotify to make sure that abrupt ending was actually on the album version and not something thrown onto the video.

[Final Thoughts: ...This write-up is heavily reminding me of Trains by this point.]
