There is a reason things didn't shake out for the Mets. It was in their control. They were complicit to stand back and watch the bullpen implode and not do anything about it. That's the simplest and shortest explanation for why they failed. You have to assume some players are not going to perform to snuff and the good/playoff/smart teams have plans for when that happens.
