Being the nave young idiot I was back then, I'd somehow actually managed to delude myself that potential employers would respect you for your honesty and even find it refreshing. It's embarrassing to admit there was a time when I really was that braindead stupid. They asked me why I wanted the job, and basically I told them it was because of the money. They disapproved of that answer; they felt it showed it wrong attitude, and that I should want the job for other, less materialistic reasons instead. I asked what was the business of business, if not to make a profit for stakeholders -- and I kind of hinted that it was hypocrisy to suddenly treat money as if it was a dirty word when it was in the mouths of employees (or potential employees).
