If we're being honest, both the Beatles and the Beach Boys were basically the first Boy Bands. Then there were The Monkees...

I would seriously posit that Deep Purple, Jimi Hendrix, and the Who were the real progenitors of hard Rock and heavy metal.

And if we're being really pedantic, I'd say Cromagnon was the first true heavy metal band.
