Phil tweeted on the birthday of his wife that they didn't have money to do anything, and that festivities included grocery shopping and going to Sonic.

So either it was a miserable day, or Phil is lying.

I am going to assume the latter, because Phil lies as much as he breathes. Ironically, the lies he uses to cover up what he actually does make him look even worse.

If he said that they went out to dinner, then at least he'd seem like a decent husband taking his wife out to dinner. Sure, it would clash with the constant lie that he doesn't have money to do shit, but this would make him look better than saying that the best thing they did on her birthday was do groceries.

There is no doubt in my doubt in my mind they went on a spending spree, because we all know this happens every time Phil gets paid, there is a reason why he hasn't done a "house tour" in ages.

People seem to constantly forget that Phil lies about everything. He had the cat for over 9 months, lied every time he brought it up (we want a cat, but can't afford it), or someone else brought it up (Phil, how do you feel about having a pet?), lied about selling his house (he said that after his trip to his parents they would make final preparations to sell the house), lied about foreclosing the CT Condo, lied about getting married.

And these aren't small lies either. It's not like you lied about being sick so you could stay home to play a game. These are lies about significant changes in your life, and what for?

Actually, scratch that. It started with one "simple" lie: not having enough money. Everything snowballed from there.
