He brings in enough to live comfortably if he made a few small sacrifices and adjustments, but he refuses to do so, or maybe is so deluded that he doesn't know how to. If almost anyone else was in his situation, they could make things work. 2.) He is pretty much fine financially and only cries broke because he thinks people will stop giving him money otherwise. This could be similar to the lies about getting married or having the cat--he's only doing it to protect himself and his family.
