"We didn't want to tell anyone about the cat because we weren't sure we would be able to keep it. There was a chance that things wouldn't have worked out, in which case the cat would have needed to be rehomed, so we decided it was better to keep quiet until we knew for sure that the cat was staying." That wouldn't have explained everything, but it's better than the usual excuse of the detractors forcing him to lie. However, nothing can explain away the fact that he repeatedly mentioned that he wanted a cat but was too poor to get one, all of this while he owned a cat the entire time.
