If they've been together for a decade then they're doing better than a lot of married couples that get divorced after a couple years! It's not just paper, there are a lot of useful benefits, most particularly what happens during medical emergencies. That being said, the social attention from even a basic-ass government application marriage at the office can be something that would put off a marriage.
