When I was there in 2017, a lot of tourists used google translate. I guess that's better than nothing but at least learn:

"good morning" - ohaiyo gozaimasu
"good day" - konnichiwa
"good evening" - oyasuminasai
"Please" - kudasai
"Thank you" - arrigato gozaimasu
and
"excuse me" - sumimasen

As for language books, I'm sure someone else can steer you in the right direction better than I.

You can also get by - in big cities at least - by writing down your question in English. They study English until 12th grade there IIRC. They can't speak it but most can read simple sentences.
