Success is more about having the trust of your coworkers so work to build that trust. Yeah, it seems like a shitty system but think of it this way: these people don't know you. They don't know if you're competent and they don't know if you'll have their back. They may be as afraid of you as you may be afraid of them, so show them there's nothing to fear.
