Why didnt Thor just go back to the ending of Infinity War and kill Thanos there?!! Fourteen million outcomes, one victory my ass!!!
Because it wouldn't change their current time line, the snap still would have happened and half of the population would still be gone

The reason you go back to that moment is because all SIX Infinity Stones are in one place: the Infinity Gauntlet. Thanos is heavily injured but still able to perform the snap. But you arrive right at that moment and finish him there? Now all six stones can be claimed in one instant, allowing Thor to return to the present in one trip, the mission complete. And the ONLY fork in the timeline is a reality where Thanos FAILS.
