Lion king in a single word:
Sterilized.

The entire movie other than Scar was read off at a monotonous level. You could tell the VAs were just reading off a script. Where in older animated movies you'd feel the VA revel in their character, and often times the character was full stop animated around the VA, even taking some of their physical expressions, with the new realistic style, it's all very muted.

The movie was excessively self aware, breaking the 4th wall a time or two and making millenial jokes. It was clear who the movie was aimed at.

Timon and Pumbaa were horrific. Neither VA did a decent job, but the lack of emotion in the animation hurt these two the most. They're supposed to be a couple of outrageous bachelor's who do ridiculous immature stuff. That didn't come across here.

Rafiki was the worst character after being a highlight of the original.

Certain things were done well. "Be Prepared" was pretty good, and I liked the "word of mouth" style. Nala's escape was well done. The death of Mufasa wasn't as bad as I expected. The movie in the lead up to Mufasas death was pretty well done. It was after that when things dropped off heavily.

The worst thing about it though, was that all the best humour was cut. "THEY CALL ME MR PIG!" was cut for a speech about a pig being offended at being called chubby. Dress in drag was cut for a shitty Beauty and the Beast joke. The entire scene between Rafiki and Simba about his father being alive was chopped to bits as was the following scene, in favour of a shitty montage to a bad Beyonce song.

It all felt sterilized, and very much like the entire thing was approved by a PR board.
