On a personal level, I don't approve of the death penalty, and I don't really give a shit if a murderer gets thrown in prison or killed. But in this specific instance given the options available, I don't know why he would be given the lesser sentence. I can only imagine it had to do with the jurors personal feelings on the death penalty, even though that technically shouldn't matter.
