This is a very rural part of Virginia and the little town of Appomattox probably enjoys this publicity. I grew up not to far from here - the locals love this kind of stuff.
I guarantee he has no issues with protesters.
Virginia is mostly a shithole. People are familiar with the nice, civilized, highly educated areas of Virginia, which are all next to DC, but if you drive a little further, even quaint little tourist towns like Occoquan are a cesspool of bigotry.
I live in Philly and I went to visit a friend that lived in Mannassas (still the nice, civilized, highly educated area) and a group of us guys decided to road trip to Occoquan because its nice and supposedly touristy. But:
- the only big bar in town right now has a gigantic TRUMP 2020 banner hanging from its balconies. - we went to an ice cream parlor and we went to order inside at separate times. A psycho b*** screamed to our black friend WE ARE CLOSED!! GET-OUT! when he tried to order. Then I went in like 60 seconds later and she actually sold me an ice cream... which I gave to my friend - locals in general would give us the stink eye sometimes, especially the black guy
Occoquan is like 20 minutes from NOVA. It gets far, far worse real fast the deeper you go into VA. Were talking shit like the movies one wrong turn and the hills have eyes
I live in Manassas, VA and can confirm this. Most of Northern VA and large cities like Richmond and Charlottesville are okay, as well as university towns like Blacksburg. Everywhere else gets real backwater real quick.

We went to a river shore bar on the same day and it looked ok until we could overhear somebody say the N word, followed by something inaudible and then the word here. Our friend was the only black guy there. We finished our drinks, hopped on our Chevy Tahoe and drove the fuck back to Mannassas.
