He finally had to deal with the question of "how do I help this kid when she doesn't want or need me anymore?". He finds purpose with Forky initially but realizes that it's not going to last. Then he finally see he can help toys like Gabby Gabby who never had a chance to experience something he already went through. I mean it's just a big analogy for empty nesters. Your kid left so you can either sit on a shelf and collect dust or you can get back out into the world and do something with the rest of your life.
