Feminism is an ideology that started as the concept that men and women were I generally equal and should be treated as such.

As society has moved forward and the western world has reflected more equal treatment, feminism has splintered into a lot of other thoughts, including some that state women are superior to men, that men are terrible, and other more radical thoughts.

Depending on the context and who is using the word, they may mean this in a positive way or a negative way. Like any ideology, there are those who are extremists and use it as justification for sexism and even violence.

It is important to recognize how people are using the word, which "faction" of feminism they are referring to, and so on.
