and the "Finding your best friend" concept is a relatively recent western convention, it's not routed in tradition, it has no grounds as a success marker for marriage, it's a random unexplored variable, completely independent of what makes a partner "worthy" or "desirable."

Friendship is ancient. Wanting friends, trying to make friends, is ancient. It's true that friendship being important to finding a partner is relatively recent - but that actually makes things easier. No longer is "courtship" some weird thing with arcane rules that you don't learn elsewhere in life. Most people have been making friends and hanging out with friends for most of their lives, and now that skillset is actually transferable into romance.

I grant your other comments are legit - e.g. maybe you find someone you really click with on a personal level, but your career paths or financial/medical situation won't work out. But that's always been a thing.
