XV is better than XII (slow ass Vanilla version, haven't played Zodiac yet) and XIII. That said, the lack of cohesion is really apparent, as the open world setting did them no favors.

I prefer it though, because while this has definite problems in pacing, I never felt chained to the story or battle system (or at least bogged down for a long stretch). I always felt I was fighting against XII and XIII's combat TRYING to be both turn-based and action-oriented. I know XII is loved, but playing it felt like a chore.

I still enjoyed the vanilla version of XV enough to play it and beat it in a week though. I'm also listening to the soundtrack. It really lives up to the FF label better than anything since X. Songs feel distinctive, there's a good mix of genres, and Shimomura understood that simplicity was best when making catchy songs, much like Uematsu did.

Personal favorites were Somnus, Crystalline Chill, Hammerhead, and Galdin Quay. Chocobo themes are good too.
