Computer's gonna be out of commission for a week or two so it will be a while before you get pics again. Bad news for today is you get AFK versions, but hey you get two!

Di Gi Charat Theater: Dejiko's Summer Vacation

So I though the "Theater" ones were 1 and 2 but that doesn't appear to be the case. This is a standalone like the first two, with mostly short episodic summer-themed stories by an assortment of authors. What's cool about this one is it has tons of bonus content- you've got extensive translator notes, a timeline of the franchise, a bunch of the original Gema Gema comics where these folks originated, character art and profiles, and illustrations from a calendar. The main content is about the same thing we've been getting for the rest of the books, but I appreciate the crash course in the history of the fandom and stuff!

My rating: 8/10
The bonus content is enough to get that extra point.
Overall rating: 7/10
It's fun, it's cute (sometimes), it's classic, it's just...not earth-shattering. It kinda reminds me of a prototype, PG-rated Excel Saga or Pop Team Epic- tons of irreverent humor and references, and making no bones about appealing straight to the otaku audience. I think it's one of those that maybe has aged unfairly poorly since we've had other series expand on the formula that (to my knowledge) Di Gi Charat pioneered. Maybe. IDK. But I am feeling 7 about this.

Bonus Question: How do you feel about your early fandoms now?

Digimon, Vol. 1 (of 5)
By: Yuen Wong Yu
Whose fault: Tombolo

Speaking of early fandoms, this was pretty much my second exposure to anime. (hot on the heels of Pokemon) Still like Digimon's worldbuilding and anime and stuff better, although Pokemon generally kicks its butt on actual games. Anyway. I remember not being super impressed with the manga, but I apparently bought (all?) five volumes of this anyway! On a reread, it holds up pretty ok- I like the artstyle, and offhand seems extremely faithful to the anime. My issue is that the pacing is kinda frenetic. If you know the show, we've already gotten to everybody's champion forms (except Angemon) and are probably going to be well into Etemon by the end of next book. It reminds me of the Dangan Ronpa (1) anime- it's fine if you're already familiar with the source material, but I feel bad for anybody trying the IP for the first time because nothing is given space or time to breathe or digest. HERE'S WHERE WE ARE OH NO IT'S THE MON OF THE WEEK OH WE DIGIVOLVED A NEW DUDE TO BEAT IT OK NEXT ONE WE'RE ON A SCHEDULE PEOPLE. I would not care about these characters if I didn't already know them. But I do, so it's kinda a fun nostalgic romp instead! Much like the dub, it is kinda heavy on vaguely cringey, super 90s-y, heavily localized humor that doesn't hold up that great to modern tastes. Dunno if the original manga was like that or not! But that is what I am (originally) used to with Digimon so it's not as grating to me as it would be to somebody who grew up on the subs.

My rating: 8/10
Fun if you're a fan. Skip it if you ain't. I imagine we're gonna be doing like 10 anime episodes a book.
