You just missed a really good time to start, as Square were giving away the base game and the first expansion for free until just recently. But it's not a bad time to start, you just have a lot of content to catch up on. The free trial should give you a good taste of what the game offers, and it leaves off at a pretty important moment in the story that might entice you to keep going. Give it a try!
