It reminded me of if Annie Wilkes was let loose on a bunch of teenagers. Saw the Suspiria remake a little while ago - it does somewhat stand on its own, because of how different it is from the original, but at the same time it's not nearly as stylish or interesting. The original was great because it was bombastic and in-your-face right from the start, and got good mileage out of its 100-minute runtime. At almost an hour longer, the new one tried to be a bit of a slow burn, which does not fit the spirit of the original at all. It had some OK set pieces and side plots, and the dream sequences were cool, but really I just wanted to go back and watch Argento's version. Looking ahead, Midsommar comes out in July, Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark in August, and It 2 in September, so this is shaping up to be an extremely good year for horror. --- Official Advokaiser advocate ...
