Anyway, I don't go to the movies so I'm usually watching a bunch of old stuff. I just saw my 35th Mikio Naruse film, Travelling Actors from 1940. It was a nice little comedy. Two itinerant actor brothers portray a horse in a play (the younger and less experienced of the two stuck in the ass-end), but are booted from the show due to a disagreement with the troupe's patron. They're then replaced with a real horse, which the elder brother doesn't take lightly. The jilted performers eventually get their revenge in the film's humorous closing moments. I'm still not willing to say I like Naruse as much as Ozu or Mizoguchi, but he's definitely among the great classic Japanese filmmakers. And I'm only about halfway through his surviving work. --- "Sometimes the best book in the world is your mind. Close your eyes and imagine your brain is an embossed leather tome." - Ken M ...
