Because people don't know their history, and they won't integrate it into educational curricula. Look at all the people in CE who don't know the what or why of Stonewall. And as for the 'unnecessary division' I will never be okay kowtowing to ignorance.

I mean there's usually a reason things don't make it into the history curriculum.

Yeah, often those with the power and authority to write the curricula mostly use it to repeat the messages that support the status quo. When that status quo is a whitewashed, heterowashed version of history, as it often is, they fail as educators. Everyone loses.

You're so out of it.

The public education system is not out to enforce positions of power.

Explicitly, no. In practice, absolutely.

Justifying the decisions of the past is how you get organizations like the Daughters of the Confederacy approving history textbooks for use in schools. For the record and why it matters, they use their editorial influence to teach "Southern Lost Cause" ideology to children and teens who have no way of knowing better. And I'm not just claiming this happens in public education, though it does. It also goes down in a distressing number of private institutions.

You want to learn about the history of abortion access in America, the minutiae of the Women's Suffrage movement, the US government's handling of the AIDS crisis, or learn about historical personas like James Baldwin, George Washington, Marsha P. Johnson or Sylvia Riviera, you will not learn them in pre-collegiate classrooms or how these things have shaped modern politics because they are often not part of the narrative the American mainstream imagines for itself.
