I don't understand why all of you people are being so harsh on the idea of a straight pride parade. These events are so important!

Why, I remember what it felt like when I first came to the realization that I was a young man who was attracted to women. I tried to deny it, tried to pretend like it wasn't so, but I was living a lie. Eventually I confessed to my parents that I was straight the day before I left for university. My Mom tried to be understanding, but there were definitely some tears there - I think she was hoping she wouldn't have grandchildren. My Dad just looked upset and eventually stormed out without saying a word. That was the start of several years where he refused to even speak to me, though we have since reconciled.

For the next few years I had to deal with the terror of living in a big city as an openly straight man. Was this the day I would find out my landlord was vehemently against heterosexuality (for religious reasons, perhaps?) and threw me out of my rental house? Was this the day someone would attack me and my girlfriend for holding hands in public? I never wanted to lie about who I was, but that was a choice that sometimes sent my heart racing. There were times I worried for my safety and wondered if I should try and hide my sexual orientation... but my lack of fashion sense and inability to name even a single ABBA song gave me away every time.

We need a straight pride parade for every young man and woman who went through all of the things I just described! If you can't sympathize with that, then you just don't understand the incredible challenge of living as a heterosexual in today's world.
