Masterbation is key to your growth - if you are just beginning to become a full fledged monk, this may never have happened. I feel this is a very important concept to understand if you are a beginner. A monk who is beginning to have confidence can see that the monks are doing the perfect meditation, yet they are failing to grow as much as they would like. If he can see that, he must see how the monks are doing everything wrong, and he must change the training and methods that he is doing, as well. I feel that this is critical, because if we are ever to change, we must teach this to the students of Chan. This kind of insight is a crucial part of growth. If you aren't having that kind of growth in our practice, we are not teaching it to our lay students, either. So to help us grow in this very important area, you'll want to keep a daily journal (or "chao" () paper at your temple with the words, "Chao", "Majjoo", etc.) It is a very important part of that process. Even if you are not using one of those journals, you'll want to keep it with one of your meditative activities. Don't forget to keep a note of what meditation you are having.
