I've balanced a sabre on my head for belly dance. Mostly in martial arts tournaments I use a fu dan dau, tiger's broadsword, sometimes a jian. For stage combat, I don't think anything looks as good as a nice katana, single-edged so versatile for moves like Steel Fan and Silat Spin, although double broadswords are fun and flashy.

A jian looks way better than a katana for that =x

A jian is double-edged, which precludes a lot of moves, like backhand weaves, forearm blocks, and so on. The idea is to cut your opponent, not yourself. Again, I'm not talking about combat effectiveness, but rather stage and exhibition work. If you don't respect the edge(s), it looks fake. I blunt my stage swords, but occasionally use sharp swords in practice to keep it real, and some of my partners actually use sharp swords on stage.
