Allowing players cosmetic options actually cheapens the experience greatly unless it's an explicit character creator or a meaningful gameplay mechanic.

Color palettes are one thing (sometimes even these aren't acceptable), but entire costumes kill it. Costumes should be changed by the game designer(s) at specific parts of the story in order to improve immersion or convey meaning related to the story/character development.

I think having different costumes was great in the Spider-man PS4 game. I kept changing the costume myself based on what was happening in the games story. When I was doing a stealth mission I switched to the Big Time or Black Cat suit because thats what those suits are designed for. And when I was fighting Silver Sables goons I switched to the Ends of The Earth suit because its heavily armored like their uniforms and made it feel like I leveled the playing field. It wa scoop to have access to so many of Spider-mans iconic costumes from the comics and movies
