The Lannisters are the most powerful noble family in Westeros and have been the real power behind the throne since before Robert's Rebellion. Is this explained in the books? Because I just bought the audiobook for the first one. Havent touched it yet though They were among the richest Houses due to all the gold mines on their land. Tywin Lannister himself was the previous Hand of the King to Mad King Aerys. They were in a favourable position and I think Tywin wanted Cersei to marry Rhaegar. However I think Aerys thought the Lannisters too low of a family to have that happen and instead promised Rhaegar to Elia.
