I think it's absolutely ridiculous to be on her side, the dude was perfectly content in his life, then some girl just tries to force her way into it and is upset when he chooses living the life he made for himself over making her happy. She should be thrilled that he's trying to open up for her at all, the dude goes out of his way to include her even after she causes him to get injured for the first time in seven years.

If this were a piece of actual fiction people would hate the girlfriend character.

i'll stop ranting about Free Solo now it wasn't really that awful, it probably would have had no dramatic tension at all in it without the nagging girlfriend and would have been like 40 minutes shorter otherwise
