He spent his whole life trying (and failing) to live up to his position as "Number One" to an incredibly overbearing father, and slowly realizes it was all (so far) for nothing. Allison sucks slightly less (honestly, yeah, in hindsight her not using her powers "because I'm mad" is really stupid), but for no discernible reason. It's never really explained how/why she used her power to become rich, famous, and "America's Sweetheart", but also her power is public knowledge, and she loses her husband/kid in a custody battle over using it?
