Before he even fully understands it himself it just starts with the conflict of no longer seeing the Machina as lifeless machines he previously had no concern at all about killing like Xord. Goes well with the next arc humanizing machina further, even Fiora developing a new identify as one but supported by Shulk just being happy to have her back. Yeah Mumkhar role was done as Shulk's changes to instead seeking to understand Egil... a role Mumkhar couldn't provide as he's just a legit vindictive evil asshole.
