I see now why this is the black sheep of the franchise (and 7 apparently welp) but to me I appreciate how dark and different it is. With a history of constantly improving itself, VI is often said to be worse than V. But so what. I frankly think VI's strengths lie elsewhere such as the awesome but hilariously broken job system as well as the map shit and the little adventures you have. People say the story is almost not there but really, it's not like IV and V have been stellar. VI is great.
