I dont know what it is about Hyouka. I think that maybe out of all of KyoAnis series, its the one that most depends on KyoAni to be great? Chuunibyou would be up there too, I guess. It doesnt seem like it does any one special thing that makes it better than all those other light novel club anime, but it is. The main cast and the side cast all have a good web of relationships with each other. Theres no lame harem elements, and the romances are ones you can really cheer for, though it does suffer the same problem most of them do where the couples dont actually get together the dream sequence where Oreki and Chitanda get together was absolutely amazing and they shouldve made it real just for the anime and if they had it would probably be a good ten spots higher on this list and augh it was so good and I hate it but I love it argh. The characters get development that makes them feel real. Oreki is a bit irritating as a protagonist sometimes, but he does a lot even when hes not doing anything, and he develops quite well throughout the show. Chitanda is the real star, and is super joyful whenever shes around. Shes an amazing blob of moe whos super cute and still feels real too. The other two mains arent quite as great, but theyre still compelling, and the side cast was excellent.

The story arcs for the show arent completely consistent, but they mostly have great climaxes (I wasnt fully sold on the series until the last episode of the Hyouka arc), and theyre a good way to deliver interesting content. What really makes the series shine above everything else is how well presented/directed everything is. Hyouka was basically the first modern KyoAni show, I think. There was nothing else quite like it at the time, and its still better than any of their other serious shows, IMO. The animation is incredible, too. 2012 was the year KyoAni became a big deal to me, and though it never had a year like that again, something being done by them will always catch my attention.
